Ecology is providing an opportunity for public review and comment on the proposed removal from the Hazardous Sites List for the Yakima Old City Landfill, located at S. 18th Street & Yakima R Mile 112 in Yakima..
The Hazardous Sites List is a list of sites Ecology reviewed for their potential threat to human health and the environment. This review is based on how much contamination is present, how toxic it is, and how easily it can come in contact with people and the environment. Sites must go through cleanup and meet state standards before Ecology can remove them from the list.
You are invited to:
Send your comments to Ecology for consideration. Comments will be accepted from February 1, 2024 through March 4, 2024.
The site is a former landfill that closed in the 1960s. The landfill was listed as a contmainated site in the late 1990s because lead was found in groundwater above state cleanup levels. Further investigation showed that the lead detected was likely naturally occurring. Lead detection in now below state cleanup standards.
Ecology had determined the site does not pose a threat to human health or the environment and recommends removing the site from the Hazardous Sites List.
After the public comment period ends, Ecology will review and respond to comments received during the comment period. Ecology will hold a public meeting if requested by 10 or more people. If no changes are necessary, the site will be removed from the Hazardous Sites List.
